Play works! Fresh from the fantastic NASAGA conference, I had an opportunity to put what I'd learned to work. Last Friday I was invited to give a presentation on The Six Thinking Hats to my friend's Organizational Behavior class (about 40 students).
Had about 45 minutes to play with, so I used an Interactive Lecture: 10 minutes of me and PPT, then divided them into six groups and had them write some open-ended and close-ended questions from their notes. They were to ask a close-ended question to one group, then ask a close-ended question to two groups and decide which group had the better answer. My friend the Instructor kept tally of the points for good questions and answers.
I had also prepared a set of cards to play Thiagi's classification card game Grabbit. Didn't have enough time, but I read a few cards to the class to see how they well they could apply what they'd learned. They're a smart group and did very well. During the debrief they described the experience as "fun," "intense," and "made you think."
There are a few things I'd do differently in the debrief, but it felt great and totally confirmed that this is the way to teach and learn. I get to come back later in the semester for a session on creativity. Can't wait.
Would love to hear how others NASAGA newcomers (or old masters) are doing.
Frank
