What games do you play for fun? (Monthly topic)

With Chris Saeger's recommendation of Pandemic, I thought a good monthly topic would be: What games do you pull out for fun as much as possible?

There is one game that my wife and I are addicted to and play every morning over breakfast (and then sometimes in the evening when we get home from work - we think it is that much fun and balanced). That game is Race for the Galaxy.  It is not a simple game to pick up, as there are quite a few rules and game mechanics that might be new at first, but once you get used to the cards and rules, we play a game in about 20 minutes and there is not one "killer" strategy, but you can win many different ways.

We also break out Dominion as much as possible because it is also a quick game that has tons of replayability and a unique game mechanic of deck-building.

For party games, the newest one that is hard to go wrong with is Telestrations which is a drawing telephone game and quite fun (though I don't enjoy their suggested scoring - I just don't score, just have fun).

One of our own (Scott Nicholson who won the Rising Star award last year) has a good video collection where he goes through the rules of different games called Board Games with Scott.

Let us know the games (new or classic) that you try to pull out of the game closet as much as possible.

Great topic.

I also love Race for the Galaxy (there is a great down loadable AI version HERE for those that have experience the game and want to practice (a bit hard picking it up from an AI).

I'm also enjoying Dominion with my gaming friends.

In that vein, we have started playing more Thunderstone. If you've played Dominion, it utilizes a similar deck buying mechanic, but instead of working up enough gold to purchase victory points (land in Dominion's case) you are leveling up a party of adventurers to go into the dungeon and defeat monsters.

I like the themey-ness of it!

Forbidden Island is another great game. Created by the designer of Pandemic, it has a similar mechanic, but is simpler to set up, explain and play. Like Pandemic it is a cooperative game where it is the players against the game. This time, you are a group of adventurers acquiring artifacts on an island that is sinking. If the island sinks before you get all the treasures, you lose. Priced around $14, it is a bargain.

My wife and I still enjoy Lost Cities as a nice two-player game.

Mr. Jack is the other game she always enjoys beating me at.

Finally, the game that my whole family can play together (ages 5 to 46) is Sleeping Queens..

Jimbo
We do a lot of family board games... Monopoly, Sorry, that sort. I'm finding games on my iPad to be the most fun as of late. I'm playing Pinball HD, Sparkle HD (which is like Zuma), Asphalt 5 (a racing game), and of course the old stand-bys: Bejeweled, Scrabble, Uno.

With the new iOS 4 operating system from Apple, the iPhone will have a gyroscope. Imagine the gaming possibilities that lie before us!

Dolly also said Civilization is now ported to the iPad -- so I'm gonna try that.
I played it Civ for a ridiculous amount of time this morning. I find it a bit like crack. It's comforting making all my buildings and inventing stuff. If you aren't interested in starting wars, it can get monotonous.

I like a lot strategy, defense and puzzle games in kongregate.com. I've also downloaded solebon from itunes so play a lot of old-fashioned solitaire. I love the convenience of the iphone/ipad with cards-- cuz you don't have to handle the 52 or 104 cards for most solitaire games. I used to play solitaire all of the time, and find that this has allowed me to pick the habit back up easily.
Hmm, several different questions here - What I play for fun is different then what I play a lot of, as I tend to play whatever is best for the group I'm together with.

What do I play for fun? If I'm by myself, I lose myself in an hack-and-slash RPG like D2 or Torchlight. I used to play WoW, but found it to be more of a job than a game.

With other people, I find that I'm seeking games that enable a social experience. I've gotten tired of heads-down strategy games where you don't socially interact - I'm finding that less fun. That said, I still play them when I'm in the mood do to puzzles, but it's a very different "fun".

Hansa Teutonica and Chaos in the Old World are two recent games that I like quite a bit.
