North American Simulation and Gaming Association

Hi all ...

I have a client that I am helping find some research about higher education institutions using gaming as an approach to learning.

Specifically the questions are:
  • Are there other academic institutions that utilize these methods for faculty development?
  • It appears as though this is very beneficial for productivity, in relation to businesses, but what about in quality of service to students, etc.
Any help is appreciated, especially websites and papers that I can pass along!

Thanks ...

Hi Dave,
Take a Roger Schank's "The Story-Centered Curriculum" in eLearn Magazine.

snip--"The essence of the approach is A realistic story that provides a meaningful, motivating role for the student, designed to ensure that the student faces exactly the right progression of challenges to stretch and build his or her abilities"

He used this approach to create a masters degree program at Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus. This is more about the student experience than faculty development. It would be interesting to know what he did with faculty.

This is what I have done, do and will do. Also applying for a sabbatical with gaming and simulation at the core of my research. www.mcatel.com/sims2media.htm
Interesting analysis about one academic's experience using games in the classroom can be found here:

David,

There are a set of organization that work with  academics and gaming.

First    ISAGA   www.isaga.info

2nd  ABSEL  www.absel.org    ABSEL also had a containing over 2000 papers on gaming in business schoo.  These papers have bibliographies of at least 10,000 references.

3rd.  Check the publication  Simulation and Games/  It is a sage publication

At the bottom of the ISAGA's web page is a large list of organizations from all over the world that have many academics involved.

I hope this is helpful.  Please let me nkow if I can assist you further.

Watch for the June issue of S&G....

Hello Dave:

I am just getting started with the development of blended approach that uses games and exercises for learning in an academic setting for teaching. As this is at the very beginning, I cannot tell you much more than that so will have to get back to you in a couple of months when I can have more information.

However, I have used games for TTT activities with trainers and non-trainers as part of non-credit custom programs myself with great effect.

You'll find information on the use of games for peace and conflict education on PaxSims: http://www.paxsims.wordpress.com
TriCorporation http://www.tri-simulation.com/About/ was one of our Learning in Practice Awards winners at the Chief Learning Officer Symposium last September.  They use simulations as a tool for corporate development.  If there are any other companies that come to mind when thinking about simulations and games in relation to corporate learning and development... please let me know.
