Simulation/Game Needed

NASAGA Members:

I am involved with an eight-day pre-departure training for development workers going to a foreign country who will generally be working with Government officials, both national and local in order for them to be able to execute their jobs independently.  I am looking for a simulation and or game that would cover one or more of the following situations:

  • Consulting with a high level (minister) government officials
  • Mentoring  mid-level government leader
  • Dealing with corruption
  • Collaborating with stakeholders such as NGO’s, private and public companies and other foreign governments.
  • Words and phrases that would be associated with this situation are:
  1. Take responsibility
  2. Sustainable
  3. Leadership
  4. Transaction
  5. Pressure
  6. Stress
  7. Results oriented
  8. Complex
  9. It is a process
  10. Expectations
  11. Patience

This sounds like it could be an interesting session. Two thoughts that come to mind from listening to Thiagi are:

 - Debate / Position games (DISTRIBUTED DEBATE from Thiagi.com isn't exactly what I'm thinking about, but the different debate/issue games where you go back and forth on different positions.

 - Thiagi's idea of bringing in dozens of leadership / Process / Complexity books and just plopping them down in the room. Have everyone grab a book that interests them and with a series of short exercises have them identify principles in the book, sharing principles to neighbors, and through different mechanics (like the THITY-FIVE game frame) percolate the best ideas to the larger audience.

Hi Chuck,

Here are a couple of thoughts. You may already know these activities.

Barnga--a simple game that demonstrates hidden cultural rules. Takes 30 min to an hour to play. The debrief could run an hour or more given your participants.

Where do you draw the line--From Gary Shirts, explores values and acceptable behavior. Im not sure of the time needed.

Star-Power--A simulated three level society of poor, middle class, and upper class, explores power relationshops also by Gary Shirts.

The partner game--I did this one on working with partner agencies to deliver disaster relief (it could be any public or social service). Takes abaout 45 minutes to play and another 45 to debrief. Let me know if you want to see it.

On sustainability, here is a simple non-computer based version of the Fishbanks Simulation.

Nice to hear from you, I hope all is wll with you and Becky.  Thank for your response.  I Star Power and BRANGA, buth the partner game and Fishbanks is new to me, I'll check them both out.  Where might I find the partner game?

I suggest you look on the web for Transparency International's materials. There probably are interactive materials there about dealing with corruption or at least references to resources. We have Where Do You Draw the Line? at the Peace Corps, if you want to borrow it. It is from Garry Shirts' company. And we also have permission to use one of Thiagi's card games--Garbage-- which explores the trade-off between personal gain and the common good.

Hi Chuck -- the Emergency Capacity building (ECB) project is a consortia of NGOs.  they have developed a simulation that might fit your needs.  You can find more info here.

By the way, you need quite a few people to run this successfully.  We tried to run it at the NASAGA conference in Virginia a few years back, but did not have enough people.
