As our event team hunted down a Virtual Event Platform, we realized that there is a great opportunity to use these environments for a variety of different tasks in the Human Capital Management arena.
From Learning and Development to On Boarding and ???, these simulated environments provide a low cost approach.
How many organizations are using simulations and gaming in this respect. Who are the top providers?
I think our audience would be very interested in hearing more about this.
I would like to know more about using these tools for On Borading.
Clarice, a lot depends on who you are onboarding, and what you want to accomplish. For example, a couple years ago, we incorporated Second Life as a component of a blended onboarding for new salespeople. This was a situation where we needed lots of live group interactions in an environment that invited a sense of "presence."
Adobe Connect that I referred to is a parallel to WebEx and Live Meeting as a virtual platform. We went with Connect due to the extra flexibility we get with it.
But back to onboarding - an online virtual platform can prove useful for onboarding when your need includes live, synchronous interactions with remote participants. That in itself has little to do with simulations or gaming. However, you can design - or re-design - many simulations and games to work in a virtual environment. You may find simulations useful in onboarding as a way of engaging your new workforce in challenges that relate to the organization, their new role, or whatever makes sense. For example, you might involve the participants in a corporate web site scavenger hunt. Form teams and have the virtual platform push the web site out to the participants to explore in a timed challenge. You can design a variety of competitive and cooperative game-like activities that engage participants in topics relevant to their onboarding experience. You could also do virtual "meet and greet" between the new hires and key people with whom they will interact in their new roles.
Those are some thought starters. How about ideas from others???
These are the types of stories our readership and audience needs to hear. I am sure Adobe would love the endorsement. They will be presenting at the Fall Chief Learning Officer Symposium in October. Sharing how Adobe Connect can be used for corporate learning and developement. Hearing that it is also being used for on boarding is great.
This Virtual Platform trend looks like it will only be getting stronger.
